Perforated cable tray type U and type C

Short answer

A perforated cable tray is a U- or C-section steel trough with a slotted base. The continuous base supports small cables along the whole route so they do not sag, while the slots keep air moving and make cable tying easy. The most common sizes on Indonesian projects are 100 x 50, 200 x 100, 300 x 100 and 400 x 100 mm.

Questions about cable tray

What is the difference between type U and type C cable tray?

Both are perforated troughs. Type U has straight side walls with a small lip, while type C folds the side wall into a C profile so the top edge is stiffer. Up to 300 mm wide, type U is sufficient. From 400 mm wide, or for longer support spans, consider type C.

Which cable tray sizes are used most?

On building and factory projects in Indonesia, 100 x 50, 200 x 50, 200 x 100, 300 x 100 and 400 x 100 mm are the most ordered sizes. To size a tray from the number and diameter of your cables, send us the cable schedule or use our tray size calculator (in Bahasa Indonesia).

Is the cover included with the cable tray?

No. Straight sections and covers are quoted as separate items per 3 m length, and our quotation lists both.

What is the right hanger or support spacing for cable tray?

Typically 1.5 to 2 m for 50 mm high tray and 2 to 2.5 m for 100 mm high tray, depending on the cable load. Place a support within 600 mm of every splice and of every fitting.
